Sihoo Doro S300 Design Story

Sihoo Doro S300 Design Story

How It All Started

Founded in 2011, Sihoo began by offering affordable chair options. Over the past decade, Sihoo has emerged as a leader in the ergonomic furniture industry, continuously delivering innovative products that improve people's lives.

As technology evolves and sedentary lifestyles become increasingly common, the demand for better seating solutions grows. With the Doro S300, Sihoo aimed to create not just another ergonomic chair, but a groundbreaking advancement in the field.

Addressing Common Issues in Ergonomic Chairs:

During the Doro S300's development, we focused on addressing common problems found in other ergonomic chairs:

1. Limited adjustability, smoothness, and tension range: Traditional spring mechanisms often fall short in these areas.
2. Inadequate support for various body parts: Many ergonomic chairs fail to effectively support different user physiques.
3. Displaced support areas during recline: When reclining, support areas in many chairs shift away from corresponding body parts, causing discomfort.
4. Pressure on thighs during recline: Seat cushions in most ergonomic chairs tilt upwards when reclining, putting increased pressure on the thighs.
To achieve our goal, we conducted extensive ergonomic research, utilizing experimentation and validation to lay the groundwork for chair development. Our dedicated research and development team tirelessly pursued a design direction that incorporated ergonomic seats capable of adapting to changes in human posture and distributing body pressure more effectively.

The Birth of the Anti-Gravity Mechanism

The mechanism lies at the heart of ergonomic chairs, shaping the seating experience and reflecting the chair's sophistication. It embodies a company's industry standing, research and development (R&D) capabilities, product competitiveness, and user understanding. As the most technologically advanced component, it integrates various functions, ultimately impacting comfort. The quality of a seat hinges largely on its mechanism.

Evolution of Mechanism Technology
Since the birth of the ergonomic chair industry over a century ago, mechanism technology has undergone six iterations. However, innovation stagnated with the introduction of the last glass fiber spring mechanism in the 1990s. Many companies struggled to break through due to technological barriers.

Sihoo's Pioneering Spirit
In 2019, Sihoo, as an industry leader, embarked on the challenging journey of researching mechanism technology. After three years and the dedication of over 100 R&D engineers, we overcame the technical limitations of the traditional dual glass fiber spring mechanism in September 2022. This achievement redefined the reclining angle, marking a significant breakthrough in glass fiber mechanism technology. The result was the first generation of the Anti-Gravity Mechanism, now commercially available.

Five Key Achievements of Sihoo's Anti-Gravity Mechanism

1. Recline Angle Breakthrough: 130°
The research difficulty of glass fiber springs doubles with each single-degree increase in the recline angle of the dual glass fiber mechanism. Since its introduction in the 1990s, with its limited reclining angle, mechanism technology remained stagnant for nearly 30 years. Sihoo's Anti-Gravity Mechanism achieves a remarkable 130° recline angle, shattering the limitations of traditional mechanisms and leading the world.
2. Material Breakthrough: Introducing Aerospace-Grade Materials
Human sitting postures are diverse, involving hundreds of daily reclining movements. These movements demand a wide range of elasticity, linearity, smoothness, and durability. Inspired by spacecraft, our research team incorporated high-performance glass fiber materials, meeting the demanding applications of spacecraft and helicopter rotor materials. This innovation establishes a new generation of glass fiber base materials.

3. Mechanical Breakthrough: Consistent Elasticity
Traditional springs often suffer from uneven elasticity, fatigue, poor durability, and safety issues. However, the aerospace-grade glass fiber material we use offers consistent elasticity without attenuation, verified through rigorous 300,000-cycle durability testing.

4. Structural Breakthrough: Four-Axis Linkage System for Coordinated Movement and Support
Research shows that a suitable seat recline angle reduces back and leg muscle strain while ensuring even pressure distribution on the seat, providing superior body support.

Sihoo's innovative four-axis linkage system automatically adjusts the seat cushion angle, ensuring coordinated support for different body regions. This effectively distributes pressure from the hips and back, alleviating fatigue during prolonged sitting.

5. Seating Experience Breakthrough: Defying Gravity, Redefining Comfort
Enhancing seating comfort remains a central focus in every generation of mechanisms. Sihoo's Anti-Gravity Mechanism, through the design of aerospace-grade glass fiber plates and a four-axis linkage structure, comprehensively addresses the limitations of traditional spring-based mechanisms, achieving coordinated seat back movement. Additionally, users can adjust the recline tension based on their weight, allowing for smooth reclining, stopping at any angle without the need to lock the backrest, and returning to an upright position effortlessly. This coordinated support and multi-angle positioning enable users to experience a profound sense of relaxation and weightlessness, as if levitating in space, defying gravity.

The Significance and Impact of the Anti-Gravity Mechanism

The successful development of the Anti-Gravity Mechanism holds significant value for Sihoo. It showcases our innovative R&D capabilities, strengthens our brand influence and product competitiveness, and empowers us to break free from lower-end price wars.

For users, Sihoo delivers a groundbreaking seating experience in ergonomic chairs, transforming the pricing structure of high-end ergonomic chairs, making premium seating more accessible.

For the industry, breaking the monopoly of certain companies fosters self-reliance in core technology for high-end seats, eliminating dependence on technological authorization. This lays a solid technical foundation for the ergonomic chair industry, sets the industry direction, and inspires more peers to prioritize R&D investment, generating further opportunities for innovation and advancement within the sector.

Complementing the Gravity-Defying Experience

While the Anti-Gravity Mechanism forms the heart of the Sihoo Doro S300, every other component is equally premium, industry-leading, and innovative, designed to seamlessly complement the gravity-defying seating experience.

Customizable Dual Dynamic Lumbar Support
Following the success of our original dynamic lumbar support in chairs like the Doro C300, we aimed to elevate its functionality with the introduction of the dual dynamic lumbar support in the Doro S300. Featuring two pads, it offers a wider support area, comfortably enveloping the user's lower back.
Connected to the main frame by four highly elastic springs, these pads dynamically adjust to various body shapes and sitting postures, ensuring consistent support. Additionally, a gas lift allows individual adjustment of the lumbar support angle from 90° to 105° for a personalized and perfect fit.

Independent Backrest for Universal Support
Recognizing the diverse needs of users with varying body shapes, the Doro S300 prioritizes optimal adjustability. While many ergonomic chairs offer backrest height adjustment, this can compromise lumbar support for taller users.
Through innovative design, the Doro S300 features an independently adjustable upper backrest. This ensures proper support for the entire back, regardless of the user's height (between 150 cm and 190 cm).

Wide and Integrated Headrest for Enhanced Comfort
Unlike most ergonomic chairs with limited headrest support, the Doro S300 boasts a spacious, integrated headrest that naturally conforms to the user's neck curve. This design not only provides seamless support for the shoulders, neck, and head but also allows for comfortable side-resting.

Premium Mesh Material: Breathability Meets Durability
While mesh is generally preferred for its breathability compared to sponge or leather, concerns often arise regarding potential loss of elasticity and support over time. The Doro S300 addresses this by utilizing a two-part solution:

DuPont TPEE: This highly elastic and supportive material ensures proper support without sagging, even with extended use.
Italian Velvet: Woven with DuPont TPEE, this material creates the Doro S300's unique mesh, offering a combination of high elasticity, softness, and firmness.
"On the Sihoo Doro S300 you feel like you're sitting on clouds! The high-quality fabric cover is pleasantly soft and comfortable. You can perfectly adjust the office chair to your own needs.“ Bürostuhl Experte

Shock-Absorbing System for a Soft Landing
Sitting on a chair with inadequate cushioning can create an uncomfortable "hard landing" sensation for the hips and thighs.
To combat this, the Doro S300 incorporates a shock-absorbing suspension system beneath the seat cushion. This system, consisting of four highly elastic springs, absorbs shock and pressure upon sitting, ensuring a smooth and comfortable "soft landing" experience. Furthermore, the system dynamically adjusts to maintain constant comfort during posture changes.

Award-Winning Aesthetics: Beauty Meets Ergonomics
Beyond comfort, the Doro S300 prioritizes visual appeal. After meticulous design efforts, the final product embodies a sleek esthetic.
The chair's striking feature is the single-piece, shiny metal main structure on the back, which connects the Anti-Gravity Mechanism, dual dynamic lumbar support, and independent backrest. Crafted from aluminum alloy using a 13-step process, it resembles a goddess opening her arms in a welcoming embrace.
